Wilco’s 2009 Red Rocks appearance followed shortly after the death of their former band mate Jay Bennett. As inspiration led, I did a commemorative, which was in turn cast into the fires of ego and shame (of Tweedy, not myself).

The Silkscreens

Just finished up these new posters for Wilco and Ween. They are both 18″x24” hand pulled silk screens which are being done by Good Thoughts 4 All . It’s good to let the freak out every now and again, he doesn’t much care for the sun, but he sure loves the smell of fresh air.

Festival Time

Another year of Bonnaroo has come and gone. It was a great line up and all my folk that were in the field had an awesome time. Needless to say I was stuck at mission control making sure the papers hit the lot before the first acts started the following day.

It still baffles me that this type of project is possible. First the advertising comes from New York to New Mexico a week prior to the festival, then every evening after the days events the feature stories and photos come from Tennessee to New Mexico, they’re strategically placed in the paper, proofed by the editor in Tennessee, final edits done in New Mexico, then the final product is shipped to the printer, you guessed it, in Tennessee. (And hits the lot before noon.)

Gotta Love the Interweb.

Do They Remember You?

When someone walks into your place of business your hope is that a transaction of some sort takes place. This is why you have invested so much of your time and money into your beautiful storefront right? But more times than not someone will come in, look around and walk back out again. No transaction. Your hope is that they saw something they like and took a mental note to come back when the time is right to make a purchase. 

The problem with this philosophy is that, in this age of information overload, chances are that person will walk out your shop and not only forget about the item they “loved”, they will also forget where they saw it.

Now a transaction doesn’t have to involve the purchase of something, it just involves that person in your store receiving something and  going home with it.

First Impression

Your logo is your primary calling card. People sum up their first impression in less time than it takes you to draw a breath. A good logo is the difference between wearing an Armani suit into a business meeting and wearing a polyester jumpsuit. Now we’re not saying one is better than the other, both will definitely leave an impression. 

Homework

Like all of  our processes, solid logo development begins with research. Who are your industry idols (or enemies)? Who do you want to impress? This is no time to be modest, you want to impress someone. 

It needs to look good everywhere.

Our litmus test with a logo is to stick it on everything. If it looks good on website, but doesn’t look good on a business card; it’s broken. Back to the drawing board. If it looks good on a business card, but doesn’t translate onto a t-shirt; it’s broken. Back to the drawing board.
